racism: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. “reverse” racism isn’t real…

Serious journalism. According to Media Matters for America,

“This December, O’Reilly has covered the imaginary “War on Christmas” more than three times as much as the actual wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

self esteem boosters: Stop policing each other! ➙

A girlfriend of mine just told me, ‘Glasses are only cute if you wear them less than 50% of the time.’ I wear my glasses all the time because I am blind as a fucking bat. I only wear contacts if we’re going out, if I’m snowboarding, or if I’m running. This is only one of the many rules she spits…

When Muslims on the BBC News are shown shouting “Allahu Akhbar!” at some clear, Middle Eastern sky, we westerners have been trained to hear: “We hate you all in your British sitting rooms, and are on our way to blow ourselves up in Lidl when you are buying your weekly groceries.”

In fact, what we Muslims are saying is “God is Great!”, and we’re taking comfort in our grief after non-Muslim nations have attacked our villages. Normally, this phrase proclaims our wish to live in peace with our neighbours, our God, our fellow humans, both Muslim and non-Muslim. Or, failing that, in the current climate, just to be left to live in peace would be nice.

Irreplaceably Different: Conservative Women, and Their Crazy Decisions ➙

Today at the store I overheard an interesting conversation taking place between the two woman in front of me at check out. One was a white southern woman, probably about fifty, the other a Muslim woman, probably in her late thirties, with six little girls (all wearing a hijab). The white woman ignorantly asked the other if she was Muslim, and the obvious answer was “yes”. The conversation then continued with the white woman openly expressing her American feminist ideas about head covers, and how they’re the product of male dominated societies oppressing women.

With an impressive amount of patience, the Muslim woman kindly told the white woman that at thirteen years old she made the decision for herself, ultimately turning to a more conservative and faithful lifestyle than what her parents raised her on. The conversation ended, and neither woman said more, but the white woman looked at me as if I were supposed to share her disbelief.

In American society, we thrive on the idea of self definition and rebellion. We’re raised to think for ourselves, and question everything. Conservative lifestyles are for the brainless, particularly those who’ve lived a sheltered and careful life. Parents who assert influence over their own children, and guide them through life based on their faith and traditions, are often found guilty of being closed minded and over bearing.

When we see women with head coverings, or modestly dressed girls who are uncomfortable with mini skirts and halter tops, we assume there’s something wrong with them. They were supposed to out grow that naive phase, according to our culture. They were supposed to rebel, question their sexual identity, and explore the freedom of choosing what to wear and how to behave. They were supposed to break free from the good behavior of mommy’s little girl, and let loose their wild side. That’s part of being an adult in America. Adult clothes. Adult drinks. Adult lifestyle. True maturity.

But as we look down upon the conservatives in the world…the Amish, the traditional Muslims, the orthodox Jews…they have reason to look down upon us as well. While we see pointless traditions and unnecessary lifestyle choices, they see us as irresponsible and barbaric. We (women) cry out for men to see us as more than just sexual objects, yet there’s no shame in flaunting cleavage and belly button rings. Women want more power in society, and a position of great importance and strength. Yet, the conservative roles for women, the ones that give woman the responsibility of teaching, raising, and molding the lives of future generations, that’s simply not important enough. The idea of a woman spending her life as a stay at home mom is simply the mindset of a male dominated society oppressing the advancement of women. There’s nothing powerful or influential about raising kids in our society (though the natural desire to have kids seems to be universal among women, even in a society which views such a thing as oppressive).

When observed closely, there is a lot of beauty in conservative lifestyles. It’s a lifestyle of self respect, as well as respect for society as a whole. Yes, sometimes these lifestyles can go too far, and sometimes it leads to abuse and oppression. But at the same time, our lifestyle of revolution and open mindedness lead to a different kind of abuse. It’s the type of abuse which is responsible for the fact that college students spend more time drunk, than studying. It’s the type of abuse that has lead to greed, and our lack of manners and kindness toward one another. And, it’s the kind of abuse that’s responsible for the sexualization of young girls through media and consumerism (because, let’s be honest. If we were more cautious about public displays of sex, the media would be a lot more careful about what they exposed our children to. I often wonder if Arab countries have to deal with that problem).

So the white woman at the store today may have thought it odd that someone made the conscious decision to turn to a more conservative lifestyle, and she may have made her judgments and placed her labels. But it’s not such a hard concept to grasp. Some people seek lifestyles which embrace self respect and discipline, undisturbed by sex, and the consequences which often accompany ignorant driven rebellion and forced open mindedness.

Women don’t get raped because they were drinking or took drugs. Women don’t get raped because they weren’t careful enough. Women don’t get raped because of what they were wearing. Or because they’re not virgins. Or because of feminism.

A woman gets raped because a rapist raped her.
